Atelier tfl

Tomás Florian van de Laak (1989) is a multidisciplinary visual artist from Rotterdam with a background in fine arts and the traditional craft of shoemaking.

Rotterdam’s industrial heartbeat influences the artist’s work both aesthetically and conceptually . Tomás continuously evaluates his role as an artist in a city with a rampant working-class mentality, where the immediate surroundings of his studio at Kunst & Complex in the industrial area of M4H in Rotterdam are a direct influence to his work.

Fascinated by the surreal appearance of machines in increasingly digital and incomprehensible global systems, combined with the urge to explore the space between fine arts and functional objects, the artist reduces and exaggerates, simplifies and amplifies. The sculptures reflect on the scale and absurdity of the machines in these systems while experimenting with different materials and techniques. His work results in a broad spectrum of concepts and approaches, while returning to footwear and wooden clogs as the primary
